High School Students Protest Possible Cuts 3-30-2011

About 50 Atherton High School students protested Wednesday morning outside of the school over possible budget cuts and teacher layoffs.
Atherton Superintendent John Ploof said he will be meeting with student leaders and will hold a special assembly to address the student’s concerns later Wednesday.
TV5 was told the teacher's union distributed information to the students ahead of the protest.
Gov. Rick Snyder’s proposed state budget includes a school aid reduction of $471 per pupil.
Earlier this week, House Democrats launched a website, www.fightschoolcuts.com, to show how the proposal would affect districts.
Published reports out of Flint said the district would have a $200,000 deficit in its fund equity next year if programming is maintained at current levels.
On Monday, Atherton parents, residents and teachers spoke out against the district’s possible financial issues during a school board meeting.
