Besides Baseball, Loons Give Big To Charities 4-01-2011

Opening day for the Great Lakes Loons baseball club is set for next Thursday, but the team does more than just entertain fans at the ball park. They are also giving back to local charities in a big way.
When baseball is played this spring at the new Andersen Recreational Complex in Bridgeport, the spectators will be comfortable watching the games. The baseball diamond is for athletes ranging in age from 5 to 18 with special needs.
And now, thanks to the Michigan Baseball Foundation, seating will be added. Eric Rutherford, the director of Parks and Recreation in Bridgeport Township, said the park now be able to buy player benches and spectator seating.
Saginaw County's Child Abuse and Neglect Council also received a grant. Development Director Delores Gale said they will use the money to buy more baby simulators.
In all, 36 nonprofits shared in excess of $100,000 in Great Lakes Loons charitable donations. Saginaw County organizations were the biggest recepients, getting more than $23,000 in grants. This is the fourth year for the grants.
Since 2008, 124 grants have been awarded, totaling more than $400,000. The foundation says next year's applications will be available in November.
