Events Honor MLK On Anniversary Of Death 4-04-2011

Residents across the state of Michigan participated in a series of national "We Are One" events to support the rights of working families.
On April 4, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tenn., where he had gone to stand with sanitation workers demanding the right to bargain collectively for a voice at work and a better life.
About 100 people gathered at the Borchard Park rally near the Saginaw County Courthouse.
Local events were scheduled in the following communities to show support for working Michigan families.
  • 9 am - 11am: Effects of Anti-Union Legislation on the Latino Community
  • Where: UNITE-HERE, 300 River Place Drive, Suite 2700, Detroit, MI
  • 11:30 am -1:30 pm: Macomb We Are The People Rally
  • Where: Kennedy Park, Mt. Clemens
  • 2 pm - 7 pm: Saginaw We Are The People Rally
  • Where: Borchard Park (Saginaw Courthouse), Saginaw
  • 3:30pm - 6pm: Muskegon We Are The People Rally
  • Where: AFL-CIO Labor Hall, 490 West Western, Muskegon
  • 4pm - 7 pm: Escanaba We Are One Event
  • Where: Corner of Ludington Street and US 2 in Escanaba
  • 4pm - 7pm: Sault Ste. Marie We Are One Event
  • Where: 500 Block of Ashmun Street, Sault Ste. Marie
  • 5:45pm - 6:45pm: Candlelight Vigil, Detroit
  • Where: Labor Legacy Monument, Hart Plaza, Detroit
  • 6:00 - 7pm: Lansing We Are One Event
  • Where: State Capitol, 100 Capitol Ave, Lansing
