'Hissing' Natural Gas Lines Concern Residents 4-11-2011

Dozens of Mid-Michigan residents were kept awake overnight after nearby gas lines began “hissing.”
TV5 took calls from concerned families after several lines began releasing natural gas at nearly 120 decibels.
One release was reported in Burton, while another was reported in Saginaw.
A Consumers Energy official told TV5 the release happens this time of year if the region experiences a rapid warm-up like the area did on Sunday, when a new record high was set.
The Consumers official said although the release sounds scary, there’s actually no reason to be concerned. When the weather warms up, fewer people use heat in their homes. The gas in the pipes gets pressurized and is released through a regulator.
