Women's Groups Call For Equal Pay For Women 4-12-2011

Michigan lawmakers and women's advocacy groups are backing a package of bills that seek to end the pay gap between women and their male co-workers.
They held a news conference at noon Tuesday in the Capitol Rotunda as part of the national Equal Pay Day.
Democratic state Sen. Rebekah Warren of Ann Arbor and Democratic Rep. Joan Bauer of Lansing discussed the bills at during the meeting.
The legislation would strengthen the Elliot Larson Act to make it clear that sex-based wage discrimination is illegal under Michigan law and increase penalties for wage discrimination based on gender.
It also would establish a pay equity study commission.
U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics figures show American women earn 77 cents for every dollar earned by men in similar jobs.
