Local Marine Recovering After Stepping On Bomb 4-13-2011

A Mid-Michigan Marine is recovering after being hurt in action.
Joey Woodke, 21, of Port Hope, lost both of his legs when he stepped on an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan.
The Marine is recovering at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Woodke graduated from Port Hope High School in 2007 and joined the Marines in 2008.
Peggy Liss, president of AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary, said the community, AMVETS and AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary of Port Hope have all come together in purchasing, making and placing yellows ribbons on homes and businesses in our community.
Liss said Woodke’s classmates and friends will also be passing out purple wrist bands with the words "Freedom isn't free" and “Joey Woodke" to all members of the community.
Meanwhile, a Navy medic from Michigan may have been killed by friendly fire.
The Pentagon is investigating how 23-year-old Benjamin Rast, of Niles, died after a missile was fired from a U.S. drone in Afghanistan.
Rast and another Marine may have been mistaken for insurgents when they were killed last week.
