Sites Chosen For 3 Thumb-Area Wind Farms 4-13-2011

DTE Energy Co. said it's picked sites for three wind farms in Huron and Sanilac counties and will spend about $225 million on the project.
The Detroit-based company said Wednesday that about 50 wind turbines will be built on 15,000 acres in Bloomfield, Sigel and McKinley townships in Huron County, and Minden and Delaware townships in Sanilac County.
The sites are located in the state's largely agricultural Thumb region.
DTE said the turbines are expected to generate 110 megawatts of electricity, or enough to power about 100,000 homes.
The company said it has completed wind and wildlife studies, and is reviewing bids from turbine manufacturers. Construction could start next year.
The project is part of DTE's broader efforts to increase the availability of renewable energy in Michigan.
