Belle Isle Prairie Burm Moved Up Two Days 4-13-2011

A prairie area on Detroit's Belle Isle is scheduled to be burned to fight the spread of invasive plantspecies in the city park.
The city says in a release that Wednesday's prescribed burn is aimed at reducing the stem and thatch density of the Common Reed,Purple Loosestrife and European Poplar.
The native wet prairie on the island needs periodic burns to regenerate some plant species and reduce woody vegetation.
Wednesday's burn originally was scheduled for Friday but was moved up two days because of rain forecast later in the week.
Other burns were done on the island last April. A number of calls were made to the city's 911 by people seeing smoke from the burns.
