Michigan Snowmobiling Deaths Down 50 Percent 4-20-2011

The just-completed snowmobiling season in Michigan produced 50 percent fewer deaths than last winter.
Statistics compiled by the Department of Natural Resources said 13 people died from injuries in snowmobile crashes, down from 26 deaths during the 2009-10 season.
The Michigan Association of Insurance Agents said this was one of the safest snowmobiling seasons on record, especially considering how long the wintry weather lasted.
The highest number of fatal wrecks came in 2002-03, when 46 people died.
The insurance group says riding at night remains a leading hazard, along with excessive speed. Most of the victims collided with trees, automobiles or other objects.
Michigan has about 392,000 registered snowmobiles.
