Businesses Excited Over CMU Med School Sites 4-20-2011

It's a project many residents think will bring a much-needed boost to downtown Saginaw.
Central Michigan University’s new College of Medicine has chosen to put two new clinical locations in the area. Local businesses are looking forward to the project that’s expected to be a major economic boost.
“I think it's a wonderful opportunity for Saginaw. It would bring more business in,” said resident Sharon Bryan.
“I think it represents nothing but positive in the sense that it brings more business to downtown Saginaw and helps us revitalize the downtown area,” said Karen Schafer, who works downtown.
Schafer said the more access to healthcare facilities, the better. “We're fortunate to have such a strong medical community now and strong resources, this is just going to grow that component even more,” said Schafer.
One of the facilities will be located here on Irving Street near Covenant HealthCare. The other will be on Hoyt Avenue, adjacent from St. Mary's Hospital.
“It will certainly bring a lot of business for just the local businesses, the fast-food restaurants, so forth and so on,” said Schafer.
It will also bring new faces to the community, something Schafer and others said could help Saginaw grow. “I think it's always good to have young people invigorate everyone and bring what they're learning, the up-to-date knowledge and so forth to the community,” said Schafer.
Central Michigan University’s College of Medicine is also expanding its Health Professions building on its Mount Pleasant campus.
