Baby Dropped Off At Grand Rapids Fire Station 4-21-2011

Authorities say a baby has been placed in the care of the state after being dropped off at a Grand Rapids fire station.
The Grand Rapids Press reports the child dropped off Wednesday night appears to be older than 72 hours but less than a year old. Under Michigan law, a parent may surrender a newborn up to 72 hours of age to authorities without risk of prosecution.
Grand Rapids Fire Department Battalion Chief Peg Felix says someone brought the child into the station and then left. She did not know who dropped off the baby.
Police were called and the child was taken to an area hospital as a precaution.
