Grand Rapids Cops Accused Of Hurting Man, 88 4-25-2011

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.An elderly man's confrontation with police is going to trial in Grand Rapids to determine if officers used excessive force.
Gerald Haveman says he suffered a black eye, a bloody nose and rib injuries when Grand Rapids police tried to arrest his son in a domestic dispute in 2008. The 88-year-old was 85 at the time.
Grand Rapids attorneys deny that Haveman was punched, but they acknowledge that an officer placed a forearm to his jaw, pushing him against a door frame. The city says Haveman's own resistance led to minor injuries.
A civil trial is scheduled to start Wednesday in federal court. Grand Rapids accuses Haveman of using "age and frailty for sympathy."
Separately, he was charged with obstructing an officer but cleared by a jury in minutes.
