Mom, Daughter Killed When Tree Falls On Van 4-28-2011

The Calhoun County sheriff's department has released the names of a Flint-area woman and her 11-year-old daughter who were killed when an old oak tree fell, crushing their minivan.
They are 46-year-old Jodi Kohn of Davison and her daughter, Erica Kohn. Jodi Kohn's 13-year-old daughter also was in the vehicle.
The Battle Creek Enquirer reported Larissa Kohn was taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo for treatment of serious injuries. The hospital said Thursday it wouldn't release information on her condition, citing privacy laws.
Authorities said the 2005 Chevy Venture van was badly crushed when the tree fell around 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday.
Sheriff's deputies said Jodi Kohn and the two girls were apparently traveling to Cornwell's Turkeyville USA when the accident happened late Wednesday afternoon.
Police found the address for the eatery and tourist stop on the minivan's GPS. It's about 300 yards from the crash site.
Authorities said the tree had to be picked up and removed from the vehicle by a large front end loader.
Davison Community Schools Superintendent Eric Lieske issued the following statement on the death of Erica Kohn and the hospitalization of Larissa Kohn:
“We’re certainly saddened by this tragedy and our hearts go out to the family. I had the pleasure of working with these outstanding girls as their elementary school principal and both are the epitome of what a great kid is with their outstanding character and true leadership. Both of these young ladies are the type of kids that you as a parent want your own children to develop in to. The family will remain in our thoughts and prayers.”
