Mitch Albom says he wrote "Ernie" as a love letter he hopes does justice to the life and legacy of late Detroit Tigers broadcaster Ernie Harwell.
The world premiere is Thursday night at the City Theatre, near the home of the Tigers.
Albom, a Detroit Free Press columnist, best-selling author and playwright, says the production he's funding is employing about a dozen people from Michigan.
Will Young, a 71-year-old Milford resident, stars as Harwell in the two-person play with 24-year-old St. Clair Shores native T.J.Corbett.
The set is the Comerica Park tunnel in which Harwell walked before addressing his adoring fans at Comerica Park on Sept. 16, 2009.
Harwell died May 4, 2010, after a months-long battle with cancer at the age of 92.
