School Leaders Talk Possible Budget Effects 5-03-2011

Saginaw Public Schools superintendent Dr. Carlton Jenkins and the executive director of financial services gave the community an overview of the effect of Gov. Rick Snyder’s budget proposal on the district's 2011-2012 budget.
The forum was held at the Thompson Middle School Auditorium at 3021 Court Street in Saginaw on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
In a news release, district spokeswoman Safiya Mosley said the district values the communities input and perspective as it formalize next years budget.
"Saginaw Public Schools is facing a budget challenge greater than any we have ever experienced," said Mosley in the release. "This situation is not unique to Saginaw. It is happening across the nation, state and other local school districts."
Mosley said the budget challenge is caused by the following:
- lower local property tax revenues - loss of one-time federal funding (IDEA & ARRA) - declining student enrollment - uncertainty of the depth of state budget cuts (projected $470-per-student reduction)
