Loons End Losing Streak, Defeat South Bend 5-03-2011
The Great Lakes Loons snapped a three-game losing streak with a 7-1 victory over the host South Bend Silver Hawks on Monday. Ryan Christenson and Derek Cone combined to hold South Bend to one unearned run on only four hits, while Great Lakes had 11 hits. Leon Landry got the Loons attack started in the top of the first, leading off with a triple and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Christian Lara. Great Lakes tacked on three more in the second to go up 4-0. Nick Akins led off with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Jesse Bosnik then singled, stole second, and eventually scored on a single by Landry. Lara grounded out and Casio Grider scored. The Loons made it 5-0 in the third on an RBI-double by Roman Peña, and then scored another run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Blake Dean to make the lead 6-0. After a Silver Hawks run in the sixth, Great Lakes countered with a run in the seventh to make it 7-1. Dean walked, advanced on a single by Michael Pericht, and then scored on a sac fly by Akins. Christenson (2-1) wen the first six innings to earn the win and allowing just one run on two hits and a walk, while striking out nine. Cone went the final three innings to get his first save of the season. The Loons (15-10) and Silver Hawks (8-15) play the rubber game of their three-game series tonight.
