Voters Approve 1-Mill SheriffÂ?s Department Tax 5-04-2011

Voters in Saginaw County approved a new 1-mill tax that avoided 35 layoffs at the Sheriff's Department and maintained 160 beds at the county jail.
Unofficial results show about 56 percent of the votes came back as yes.
“Thirty-five of my employees would have been out of work and they’re like my family,” Sheriff William L. Federspiel said. “I’ve never run an election or a campaign other than for myself -- until now.”
The millage will raise about $4.4 million during the first year. It runs until 2015.
The tax will also keep road patrols and department staffing intact.
The county had about a 16.5 percent voter turnout, according to published reports.
