County Warns Of Fake Food Inspector Scam 5-06-2011

The Saginaw County Department of Public Health is warning food establishments about a scam involving fake food inspectors who are currently making the rounds in Mid-Michigan.
Several local restaurants have reported they have received calls from individuals claiming to be from a health department.
The callers request to schedule an inspection at the establishment, and also ask for sensitive information from the business. If refused, the scam artists then threaten enforcement action and fines.
Health department officials told TV5 that inspections of restaurants are usually unannounced to ensure proper food safety measures are being followed at all times. Officials said it is rare that a local or state health inspector would schedule an inspection in advance.
The department suggests asking for identification of someone you don’t know stops by or calls claiming to be from the Saginaw County Department of Health. If the individual cannot provide proper ID, authorities advise not to allow the person access to the facility.
They ask that business owners contact them immediately at 989-758-3686 to report the exchange.
