For Sale: Mobile Command Center, Slightly Used 5-09-2011

Local officials are getting ready to sell an emergency vehicle that initially cost taxpayers and donors $365,000 to purchase.
The "state of the art" mobile command center, which has been gathering dust for years, hasn't been used since 2008, two years after it was purchased. TV5’s Tia Ewing asked The Tough Questions about why the county purchased the unit in the first place.
"It's like a white elephant. We can't sell it," said Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell.
It was brought in as a command center to be used for police emergencies or natural disasters, but instead, the sheriff said, it has brought on a lot of issues. "It's had limited use and has little to no value to us," said Pickell.
The RV-style motorhome, which is worth less than what the county paid for it, has been sitting in a garage for the last three years, and authorities said they've only used it twice. "I think it was the wrong vessel for what we need," said Pickell. "The appraisal value was around $200,000." And officials said the unit needs about $60,000 in repairs.
Pickell said he knows the county will lose money when they sell the command center. "Hopefully they will sit down and talk to all of the first responders and see what we really need and want," said Pickell.
