Mock Disaster Drill Held In Genesee County 5-12-2011

Imagine a massive explosion hurdles chemicals into the air, contaminating the area and putting nearby students at risk – but it’s all just a drill.
The exercise in Genesee County is aimed at making sure local first responders are ready to react in case of a real emergency. The drill plays out like the pages of a novel. A group of students is on a tour of the local water plant when an explosion rocks the facility, leaving students injured, bloody, and some dead.
Students from the Emergency First Responders class at the Genesee Area Technology Center played the victims. They all agree the drill is a very important learning tool.
“They really need to practice in case it really happens, so they have to know exactly what they would do then," said Genesee Area Tech Center junior Larissa Greenfield.
"It's like showing us hands-on what's going to happen if [we] were actually to go out in the field, and it just gives us good experience," said another junior, Shy McLemore.
"If something really like that really happens, then they're prepared for it, mentally and physically," said senior Antwon Edwards.
Dawn Holcomb, a teacher at the Tech Center, thinks these drills are not only good for the students and first responders, but also the community. “I think this is really good for our community,” said Holcomb. “We're making sure we're ready for any type of disaster."
Students said they learn as much from these disaster drills as the first responders themselves, and in the event of an actual emergency, it's good to know that everyone's on the same page. Each year drill organizers use a different disaster scenario to keep first responders sharp.
