City Considers Mixing Police, Fire Departments 5-16-2011

Bay City officials are trying to get creative when it comes to generating revenue in the cash-strapped city.
City leaders recently held a budget workshop to discuss the money woes.
The Bay City Times reported that Bay City Manager Robert Belleman said water and sewer rates would have to increase in order not to operate in a deficit. TV5's Liz Gelardi reported that if something doesn’t change with the utility rates, there is a projection that residents could see their sewer rates go up by 4 percent and their water rates go up by 12 percent.
To save money, the city is also considering a combined police and fire department, where personnel for both would be cross-trained. The city manager is asking the police and fire chiefs to find $3 to $4 million in savings in their departments.
The move could save up to $4 million a year, half of which could be shifted to water and sewer to relieve rates, according to the paper.
