Saginaw Public Schools To Issue Layoff Notices 5-16-2011

Saginaw Public Schools announced on Monday its making cuts across the board.
Saginaw Public Schools spokeswoman Safiya Mosley said about 15 percent of all employee groups would receive layoff notices now through Wednesday.
Mosley said the cuts are being made to offset losses in federal and state money, a declined enrollment and lower local property taxes.
In all, 65 teachers, 36 service employees, nine educational support staff, six secretaries, six administrators and five bus drivers could receive pink-slips.
The Board of Education Finance Committee has a meeting scheduled May 18 at 5:30 p.m. at the district Administration Center, 550 Millard.
The new school fiscal year begins July 1.
The Saginaw School District is asking parents to read and then fill out a sample letter to Gov. Rick Snyder in an effort to ask the governor not to make such drastic cuts to public education.
