GM Could Invest $417M In New Flint Paint Facility 5-16-2011

General Motors Co. may invest about $417 million in a new paint facility for its truck assembly plant in Flint that could bring 50 new jobs.
Published reports Monday said that the city's Brownfield Redevelopment Authority is recommending approval of a plan to redevelop the property that once was considered as a site for a Chevrolet Volt engine plant. The plan includes a request for a brownfield tax credit.
GM spokesman Tom Wickham says in a statement the company "is developing a business case regarding a potential future investment." He says the decision about whether to go forward with the project depends on factors including possible incentives.
"GM is developing a business case regarding a potential future investments in a brownfield site at the Flint Assembly plant. An application has been submitted as the company explores potential business opportunities in Flint," Wickham said. "The decision to go forward with any project is dependent upon a number of factors, including a sound business case that contemplates incentive support. GM is making no announcement as this time."
In February, GM and UAW leadership at the plant told employees officials were studying building a paint pretreatment facility near the assembly plant and looking at other upgrades to the paint operations inside the facility," Wickham said.
The plant currently has 2,100 employees and is in the process of adding employees (transfers and recalls from layoff) for the third shift that will begin the week of Aug. 7.
Detroit-based GM on Friday announced plans to invest $109 million in its Flint and Bay City operations to support engine production.
