Ex-Port Hope Coach Pleads To Sex Crime Charge 5-17-2011

A former track coach at Port Hope High School has pleaded guilty to third-degree child abuse after prosecutors said he had a relationship with an athlete.
Jared A. Jurgess, 24, of Harbor Beach, had a relationship with a 17-year-old Port Hope Community School student who was a member of the track team, police said.
Jurgess was originally arraigned on one count of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of third-degree child abuse.
The charge of criminal sexual conduct was dropped in exchange for his guilty plea to the child abuse.
Sentencing for Jurgess was set for June 27 at 1:30 p.m., and his bond was continued.
A conviction of third-degree child abuse carries the same maximum prison sentence of two years as a conviction of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, but Jurgess would not need to register as a sex offender.
