Local Student Selected For KFC Scholarship 5-18-2011

Good news for Cierra Charles, a senior who’s about to graduate from Whittemore-Prescott High School.
She is a lucky recipient of a $20,000 KFC Colonel's Scholarship. The awards presentation is Friday, May 20th at 1:00 pm at Whittemore-Prescott High School.
Cierra is one of the 75 students nationwide to be selected as KFC Colonel’s Scholars. With her entrepreneurial spirit, commitment to education, and her perseverance it was evident to the committee that she was deserving of this scholarship.
This scholarship is for $5,000 a year for up to four years, for a potential total of $20,000, as long as she continues to meet the eligibility requirements. A couple of the requirements are maintaining a 2.75 GPA and once a sophomore required to work or volunteer 300 hours within the school year. We require that some of those hours go towards eliminating hunger.
Cierra plans on attending Ohio State University to study veterinary medicine. She has aspirations of becoming a surgeon, managing her own medical facility and eventually teaching. She serves as Student Council President and is a member of the Health Occupations Students of America, as well as the softball, track and volleyball teams. In her community she is a member of the Youth Council, Equestrian team and works with the Bay County Humane Society.
The first KFC Colonel’s Scholar Scholarships were given in 2006. Over 375 scholars are currently in college or have completed their bachelor degrees. The KFC Colonel’s Scholar’s program awards 75 scholarships each spring based on financial need and impact each student has in their school and community.
Each scholar is eligible to receive up to $20,000 over four years in order to pursue a bachelor’s degree at an accredited public university. The KFC Colonel’s Scholars’ mission is to empower students to improve their lives with scholarship resources. The program has awarded more than $8 million in scholarships since its inception.
