Man Bound Over For Trial In TrooperÂ?s Death 5-18-2011

It's now up to a jury to decide what happens next for the man charged with starting the chase that ended in a state trooper's death.
Carl Entrekin, 23, is accused of fleeing police in a chase that resulted in the death of Michigan State Trooper Jeffrey Werda.
Entrekin, of Oakley, is charged with driving with a suspended license, three counts of possessing or using marijuana, as well as manslaughter fleeing and eluding causing death. Authorities said originally Entrekin was stopped for defective equipment, but instead of pulling over, he fled.
Werda was attempting to join the pursuit while driving on Birch Run Road, just west of Morrish Road, when his vehicle swerved sharply to the left, rolled several times near a drainage ditch and left a debris trail several hundred feet long.
At Tuesday’s preliminary exam, a specialist testified that Werda was not wearing a seat belt, but he made it clear that it wasn't the sole factor in Werda's death. The specialist testified that he believed Werda would have died regardless of whether he was wearing a seat belt or not.

“It's that pursuit that put this whole chain of events into action,” said Michigan State Police Sgt. Timothy Robbins, a traffic accident reconstruction specialist.
Robbins investigated the crash site, and he testified that Werda was traveling at a speed of around 110 mph when he began to lose control of his vehicle.
TV5 reporter Jessica Maki was in court for the testimony and said Entrekin sat silently with a blank stare on his face during the preliminary hearing.
“If there had been no pursuit, Trooper Werda wouldn’t have been traveling at a high rate of speed that day, and we wouldn't be here today, end of story,” Robbins said.
The judge bound Entrekin over for trial on first-degree eluding and four misdemeanor charges.
