Flooding Prompts Several Area Road Closures 5-19-2011

Flint is experiencing a record-setting wet spring, and this week's rainfall has flooded yards and roads around the area.
The National Weather Service says 14.53 inches of rain fell March 1 through Thursday, a record high for the period.
More rain is expected next week. The weather service said the Flint River at Flint crested Thursday afternoon 1.8 feet above flood stage, while the Shiawassee River at Owosso was 0.4 feet over flood stage and slowly falling.
Curtis Hudson of Genesee County's Mount Morris Township said he ran into barriers when he tried driving down Flushing Road, a major thoroughfare.
Todd Hayden is manager of Thompson Creek Turkey Farm and Café and says his business was cut in half Thursday.
WNEM TV5 has received numerous reports of water covered roads in Genesee County Thursday morning.
  • Oak Road between Coldwater and Stanley in Richfield Township is closed at this hour.
  • Wilson Road at Duffield Road in Montrose area.
  • Flushing Road between Linden and Mill in Flint Township is completely covered with water and is not passable.
  • Lavelle Road near Pasedena Avenue is also closed because of the flooding.
  • I-75 at US 23 split in Mundy Township
  • Bristol Road at Linden Road in Flint Township
  • Perry Road at Irish Road east of Grand Blanc
  • Atherton Road at Center Road and Genesee Road in Burton

Many streets in low-lying areas of Genesee County are experiencing similar problems at this time.

The Flint River is expected to crest at around 14 feet, more than a foot above flood stage. The Kearsley Creek near Davison is also expected to crest Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
