Thousands In Lansing To Protest School Cuts 5-23-2011

Several thousand people have demonstrated at Michigan's Capitol to protest against past and future cuts in state funding for public schools.
Teachers unions and others participated in Saturday's rally in Lansing.
The state has reduced per-pupil funding by $170 in the current budget year, and Gov. Rick Snyder has proposed a further cut of $300 more for the fiscal year that starts Oct. 1.
A tentative agreement between the Republican governor and leaders of the GOP-controlled Legislature would restore $100 to $200 per pupil, the amount depending on whether school districts adopt what officials describe as "best practices."
