Final Budget Votes Approach For Lawmakers 5-26-2011

Michigan lawmakers are about ready to finish work on the state's next government spending plan.
The final budget votes could be taken as early as Thursday in the Republican-led Legislature, although that depends on how quickly the final versions of bills can be drawn up and votes can be taken.
Lawmakers have targeted next Tuesday as an informal and flexible deadline to complete votes for the budget year that begins Oct. 1.
The basics of the budget deal have been known since Gov. Rick Snyder and Republican legislative leaders reached tentative agreement last week.
Public schools would be cut by an additional $300 per student, although some of the reduction could be offset with one-time assistance.
Universities would face a 15 percent reduction in their state aid.
