Man Gets 3-15 Years In Killing Over Vodka 5-26-2011

A Warren man who killed his ex-brother-in-law with a wood plank in a fight over vodka has been sentenced to serve three to 15 years in prison.
James Jaynes pleaded guilty in April to manslaughter on the day his trial was to begin in Macomb County Circuit Court. The 46-year-old was sentenced Wednesday.
Police say Jaynes killed 52-year-old James Hilla during a June 8 altercation outside Hilla's apartment in Warren. The men fought over Jaynes swigging vodka from a bottle passed among a group of men.
Jaynes told Judge Matthew Switalski he misses Hilla and regrets killing his longtime friend, who died of internal bleeding from a lacerated spleen.
The Macomb Daily reports Switalski's decision was within sentencing guidelines even though Jaynes has six prior felony and 12 misdemeanor convictions.
