Organizers: Saginaw fireworks donations down

Posted: Updated:

Summer is almost officially here and before you know it Fourth of July celebrations will be going on across Mid-Michigan. But fireworks shows aren't cheap and raising money to fund the displays is going on full blast.

Saginaw Area Fireworks volunteers were out in front of Tim Horton's restaurants Friday morning for several hours collecting donations.

Carson Newberry, 9, was one of those volunteers.  Thursday was the last day of school for him and he didn't mind raising funds for the show that's important to him, telling WNEM TV5, "I've gone to the fireworks ever since I can remember."

Saginaw fireworks organizers want their Fourth of July show to be bigger and better than last year

"We're going to have vendors on both sides of the river again this year," said Jodi Ezop. "It's just going to be an awesome display."

Organizers increased their budget by $10,000, up to $80,000. They said they are only about halfway to reaching that goal.

Organizers thought about charging admission to Ojibway Island, but then decided against it. They will continue to pass the hat during the show.

For a lot of folks in Mid-Michigan the Fourth of July wouldn't be the same without a fireworks show on Ojibway Island.

Saginaw resident Pat Thompson kicked in a donation, saying "I think this year is really tough for everybody and especially functions like the fireworks, and there's too much money going out of the county for corporations that are here I'd love to see this money stay here."

Meanwhile Carson Newberry will probably be out here again next Friday morning raising money for the fireworks show.

"I think it's good for the men and women that served in the war," Newberry said.

Volunteers will be in front of all three Saginaw Tim Horton's locations next Friday collecting money for the show.
