6th Grader Killed By Train

An 11-year-old sixth grade student was hit and killed by a train Thursday morning in Lapeer County.  Imlay City police said it happened at a crossing on Handley Street just after 7 a.m.  Imlay City Community Schools superintendent Dr. Gary Richards said Tomas Rodriguez, a middle school student, was struck by the train  .Police say a crossing gate was down and warning lights were flashing.   Authorities said the incident is under investigation.  Imlay City is about 65 miles southeast of Saginaw.

Tragically, Tomas Rodriguez, a sixth grade middle school student, passed away this morning after being struck by a train while walking to school.District crisis response team members have been deployed to assist students and employees. Our district crisis team has been in place since we learned of the accident.We are deeply distressed by this tragedy and the loss of Tomas. We extend our heartfelt sympathy, thoughts, and prayers to the Rodriguez family.
