DETROIT (AP) - Alex Avila hit an RBI single off the wall in right field with two out in the bottom of the ninth to give the Detroit Tigers a 3-2 victory over the New York Yankees yesterday. The Tigers sent Kyle Lobstein to the mound for his first major league start. The rookie allowed one earned run in six innings. Phil Coke got one out for the win.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) - Lions third-string quarterback Kellen Moore threw two touchdown passes in a 23-0 win over Buffalo last night. Bills rookie receiver Sammy Watkins reinjured his ribs in the contest. The first-round pick did not return after being struck in the left side by linebacker Ashlee Palmer on Buffalo's second drive.

MOUNT PLEASANT, MICH. (AP) - Central Michigan scored on its first two second-half drives in a 20-16 comeback victory over Tennessee-Chattanooga last night. Thomas Rawls finished with 123 yards on 25 carries. Cooper Rush completed 15 of 26 passes for 176 yards and two TDs for the Chippewas in the season opener for both teams.

YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) - Rynearson Stadium's green artificial turf didn't do Eastern Michigan's football team any favors over the past decade. The team hopes a switch to gray might give it a fresh outlook. New head coach Chris Creighton says the nickname of "The Factory" is a good metaphor for the broader change in culture he's hoping to instill in the team.
