Memorial held for Dr. Kevorkian

Posted: Updated:

Friends and family of the late Dr. Jack Kevorkian have remembered him as a courageous champion of physician-assisted suicide at a memorial service in suburban Detroit.

More than 150 people attended the public service Friday at a cemetery chapel in Troy.  Kevorkian will be laid to rest later Friday during a private grave-side service.  He died in a hospital last week at age 83.

Standing behind her uncle's American flag-draped casket, Ava Janus told mourners that Kevorkian simply wanted the gravely-ill to have a choice over how they would die.

Kevorkian claimed he helped more than 130 people die before going to a Michigan prison for second-degree murder in the 1998 death of a man with Lou Gehrig's disease.
