It takes $227,000 to raise a child

Posted: Updated:

Are you thinking of having a child? If so, start saving.

Here's why.  The U.S. Department of Agriculture says children who were born in 2010 will cost a middle-income family nearly $227,000.

That takes into account 17 years worth of necessities like food and shelter. However, that total doesn't include college tuition.

The U-S-D-A says huge price hikes were seen in child care, education, health care and transportation.

1960 was the first year this report was issued. Back then, families spent slightly more than 25-thousand dollars to raise a child to age 18.
