Jury selection starts in Port Huron fatal stabbing case

Posted: Updated:

Jury selection is under way in the first of three trials for two men and a woman charged in a knife attack that killed the woman's adoptive father and seriously wounded her mother.

Nineteen-year-old Jonathan Kurtz is the first of the three defendants to go to trial in St. Clair County Circuit Court. Jury selection started Tuesday.

Kurtz, 19-year-old James Preston and 18-year-old Tia Skinner face murder, assault and conspiracy charges.

Paul Skinner was killed and Mara Skinner was wounded Nov. 12 in their Yale home, about 90 miles southeast of Detroit.

A prosecutor has said the couple were attacked after forbidding Tia Skinner to see to see Kurtz and confiscating her cell phone.

Preston's trial is expected to start next month. Tia Skinner's trial is scheduled for August.
