Michigan starts hearings on international bridge

Posted: Updated:

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder's administration is pushing for a new bridge to connect the state with Canada.

Republican Lt. Gov. Brian Calley said at a Wednesday state Senate hearing that the proposed bridge could be a key to boosting economic development in the state by enhancing trade with its biggest international partner.

The proposed New International Trade Crossing is a hotly debated, intensely lobbied issue.

Snyder, many businesses and labor groups want to build the second span across the Detroit River to aid passenger and commercial traffic. But the project is opposed by the private owners of the nearby Ambassador Bridge.

Some Republican lawmakers have been against the project in recent years.

Supporters are trying to prompt a fresh look at the project.
