Controversial church to protest local soldier’s funeral

Posted: Updated:

Members from the Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas are planning to protest during the funeral for a Mid-Michigan soldier killed while serving overseas.

A funeral is planned Thursday for Army Private First Class Brian Backus, who was killed in an insurgent attack in Afghanistan. The 21-year-old combat medic died of wounds suffered when his unit came under attack by small arms fire.

His remains arrived Monday at Huron County Memorial Airport in Bad Axe.

The funeral will take place at Harbor Beach High School, from which Backus graduated three years ago. Westboro Baptist Church says on their website that they will be within lawful proximity to the high school to carry out their protest.

Visitation is set for Wednesday at Ramsey Funeral Home from 1 to 9 p.m. and again at 9:30 a.m. until moving to the school's gymnasium in Backus' hometown of Harbor Beach.

Backus was president of his class at Harbor Beach High. He's survived by his parents, brother and 2-year-old son.
