Funeral set for slain SD police officer, Midland native

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - The funeral for a Rapid City police officer shot and killed in the line of duty will be Sunday.

The police department says the ceremony for 28-year-old James Ryan McCandless is 2 p.m. Sunday in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center's Barnett Arena.

McCandless will be buried in his hometown of Midland. His father was Jim McCandless, the former Midland County Undersheriff.

On Saturday afternoon there will be a public procession from Kirk Funeral Home to the Civic Center, along with a public viewing at Barnett Arena.

McCandless was 1 of 3 officers shot while performing what authorities have described as a routine stop on Tuesday.

Officer Nick Armstrong, 27, and 39-year-old Officer Tim Doyle remain hospitalized. The alleged shooter was shot by police and died Wednesday.

McCandless was a six-year veteran of the Rapid City Police Department and was recently engaged to be married.
