RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - People packed the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center on Sunday to say goodbye to slain Rapid City police officer James Ryan McCandless.
The 28-year-old McCandless was 1 of 3 officers shot while performing what authorities have described as a routine stop on Tuesday.
Police Chief Steve Allender told the crowd at the funeral Sunday that McCandless showed bravery and selflessness "in a way we can all be proud of." He also thanked everyone for their support, saying he had never seen anything like it in his life. Pastor Greg Blanc (blawnk) prayed for people to experience peace.
Twenty-7-year-old Officer Nick Armstrong and 39-year-old Officer Tim Doyle remain hospitalized. The alleged shooter was shot by police and died Wednesday.
McCandless will be buried later at the Midland City Cemetery in Midland, Mich.
