LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Attorneys for a state lawmaker have filed a court challenge in an attempt to derail a recall effort.
The legal challenge was filed Monday with the Michigan Court of Appeals on behalf of Republican Rep. Paul Scott of Grand Blanc.
A group called Citizens Against Government Overreach is trying to place a recall effort targeting Scott on the November ballot. The group says it submitted more than 12,000 voter signatures to state election officials last week. Roughly 9,600 signatures would have to be ruled valid to make the ballot.
State election officials have about a month to review the signatures.
Scott is arguing the state election officials should not have accepted the signatures because there is an appeal pending on whether the language used on recall petitions is clear.
