Man charged in standoff collapses in custody, dies

PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) - A 55-year-old man charged after authorities say he held police off for six hours outside his Algonac home has collapsed while in jail and died.

The St. Clair County sheriff's department says Richard Stokes collapsed Saturday at the Intervention and Detention Center shortly after a "brief struggle" with deputies. He was taken to a Port Huron hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The department says the struggle took place as six deputies went into an observation cell to take a comb from Stokes. The department says he wouldn't give them the comb, which is forbidden in the cell.

An autopsy found he had severe cardiac disease. A cause of death will be determined following toxicology tests.

The standoff was Aug. 11 in Algonac, about 35 miles northeast of Detroit.
