FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Authorities in Genesee County say a 32-year-old Flint man has been charged with murder and home invasion in the hit-and-run death of a 66-year-old man.

According to the Genesee County Prosecutor's Office, Eddie B. Simmons intentionally struck and ran over Jewel Baxter, who had come to the aid of a woman who was being assaulted by Simmons on Gloucester Street near S. Dexter Street on the city's south side Sunday night.

According to an investigation by the Flint Police Department, Simmons was looking for his girlfriend when he broke into the home of a female relative of hers on Gloucester Street.

Police said Simmons proceeded to physically assault the relative and then got into an altercation with Baxter who had tried to intervene in defense of the woman.

The altercation between Simmons and Baxter continued outside to the street and Simmons then got into his car and drove away, running over and killing Baxter as he left, according to police.

"This was a terrible tragedy that resulted in the death of a man who was simply trying to come to the rescue of a friend who was being assaulted," said Prosecutor Leyton.

Reports say Simmons turned himself into police Tuesday.
