PORTAGE, Mich. (AP) - A 42-year-old runner has died after collapsing in southwestern Michigan at the end of his first 5K race.
Heather Brown tells the Kalamazoo Gazette that her husband Shawn Brown had trained for months ahead of Saturday's Peacock Strut at Celery Flats in Portage. She said she was at home with the couple's two daughters during the race.
Portage police say he collapsed at the end of the race Saturday morning and was taken to a hospital. An autopsy was planned.
Heather Brown says her husband played football during high school and college, and it was his first 5K race. She says he was a dedicated father.
Portage is located about 50 miles south of Grand Rapids.
