BRECKENRIDGE, MI (WNEM) -

Invenergy and DTE Energy hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday at the Gratiot County Wind Project.

According to the two companies, the Gratiot County Wind Project will be a 133-turbine, 212.8 megawatt project generating enough clean, renewable energy to power approximately 50,000 Michigan homes.

Local, state and federal officials, as well as business and community leaders, were in attendance near the Village of Breckenridge.

When the $440 million project is completed it will be Michigan's largest wind farm. The turbines will stand in four townships — Wheeler, Bethany, Lafayette and Emerson.

Invenergy and its affiliated companies have developed and placed in service 26 wind farms and five natural gas-fueled generating facilities. The aggregate capacity of these facilities is approximately 5,000 megawatts, which can provide enough power for approximately two million homes.

Invenergy's home office is located in Chicago, with regional development offices throughout the United States and in Canada and Europe.

DTE is one of Michigan's biggest power and natural gas companies, servicing a total of 3.3 million customers in the state.
