SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

The Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra opens its 2011-2012 season "Pure Music, Pure Michigan" with "A Fantastic Beginning" at the historic Temple Theatre in downtown Saginaw.

"This season, the Saginaw Bay Symphony Orchestra will marry the amazing variety that is Michigan with the rich diversity of emotion that is music." said Brett Mitchell, Music Director.

"A Fantastic Beginning" will kick off with a fantastic fight between evil and the quintessential American superhero, followed by a fantastic vision of the afterlife and the amazing finale will close with the fantastic dreams of a lovesick artist.

Michael Daugherty's Red Cape Tango leads the evening's fantastic adventure with a bang. Daugherty, Professor of Composition at the University of Michigan recently won the Grammy for contemporary composition for the Nashville Symphony recording of his Metropolis Symphony of which Red Cape Tango is the final movement.

The evening's program also showcases the talents of one of today's most exciting pianists Jason Hardink performing Franz Liszt's Totentanz with the Orchestra. Hardink holds the positions of Principal Symphony Keyboard at the Utah Symphony and Artistic Director of the NOVA Chamber Music Series.

The climax of the night is the masterpiece Symphonie fantastique, composed by Hector Berlioz at the beginning of the Romantic period.
