Alma College wants students living downtown

ALMA, Mich. (AP) - The president of Alma College wants students to get to know the town of Alma.

Jeff Abernathy wants a "seamless interaction" between the small college and the mid-Michigan community, an hour north of Lansing. He tells the Morning Sun there are plans to turn the former Opera House building into student apartments and retail.

Abernathy says the building would stay in private hands and on the tax rolls but the college would rent the apartments. Alma College already has acquired a former pharmacy and turned it into an ice cream shop. Books will be added there soon.

The school has 1,444 students and hopes to stretch to 1,700. More than 90% come from Michigan but the president wants to attract students from other countries.
