Michigan will have a starring role on movie screens across the country Friday with the nationwide releases of Real Steel and Ides of March

Both movies were filmed extensively throughout Michigan.

"With two of our most high-profile projects being released on the same day, Michigan will be in the spotlight in front of national audiences this weekend," said Carrie Jones, director of the Michigan Film Office. "Combined, these two films shot at more than 30 locations in 18 different cities, showcasing the wide variety and versatility of locations found in Michigan."

Real Steel, an action drama set in the near-future where 2,000-pound robots have replaced humans in the boxing ring, shot in Michigan from June to Sept. 2010.

The project filmed on location in Auburn Hills, Bad Axe, Davisburg, Detroit, Grosse Ile, Grosse Pointe Farms, Hartland, Highland Park, Leslie, Mason, Milford, Oxford and Ubly.

It stars Hugh Jackman, Dakota Goyo and Evangeline Lilly with Shawn Levy directing.  Steven Spielberg was an executive producer on the project.

In Real Steel movie-goers will see the Highland Park Ford Plant and the Pontiac Silverdome transformed into Crash Palace and the Starblaze Arena – two of the fight venues featured in the film.  Also featured is Cobo Arena as the Omni Center Main Arena, Grosse Ile Municipal Airport doubling as both a military airplane hangar and western bar, and Ingham County Courthouse serving as the courtroom backdrop for a Dallas County Courthouse in the film.

In Ides of March an idealistic staffer for a presidential candidate gets a crash course in dirty politics during his stint on the campaign trail. 

The film shot in Ann Arbor, Bloomfield Hills, Clawson, Dearborn, Detroit, and Farmington Hills from March 8 to Aug. 5, 2011. It stars George Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Evan Rachel Wood and Marisa Tomei. George Clooney also directed the film.

Michigan locations on display in Ides of March include Christ Church Cranbrook, as a West Virginia church where key characters come together for a funeral, the Dearborn Inn as the backdrop for candidate Mike Morris' appearance on the Charlie Rose Show and the Power Center for the Performing Arts doubling as a venue for a campaign event being held by Governor Morris (Clooney) at Kent State University.
