Flint, Birch Run 'Sonic' locations to close for winter

Posted: Updated:

One customer and his dog got some bad news from Sonic on Monday.

"Daffney's not happy about it either. She wanted a Sonic burger," said one patron to TV5.

Unfortunately for Daffney and her owner Doug, they're going to have to wait a little while longer to get that Sonic burger. For the first time since opening in 2009, Sonic locations in Birch Run and Flint have closed for the winter.

Off camera a corporate spokesperson tells TV5 that a significant loss of sales during the last two winter seasons made this move necessary.

Potential customers pulling in to the drive thru in Birch Run were greeted with a blank menu and a closed sign. It was something that took many of them by surprise. Below are several quotes from Mid-Michiganders pulling up for a burger:

"It's kind of bummer because I'm hungry right now an wanted a cheeseburger."

"I guess there's no use being here."

"My kids love coming here we came all the way from Bay City."

"I'm a little disappointed. Was hoping they'd last a little longer for the season but what can you do?"

"I didn't know a place like this would close for the season."

Meanwhile, 36 Sonic employees are out of a job tonight. It isn't clear whether any of these workers will be brought back when the two Sonics' open April 1, 2012.

Sonic is owned by Miller Apple Limited Partnership. And company officials tell me today is a sad day. However they are hopeful that this winter is the only time this drive in has to close for the season.

The company also owns 21 Applebees locations across the state and former Sonic employees will have the chance to interview there.
