Michigan Senate approves Pledge of Allegiance bill

The Michigan Senate has approved legislation to require the Pledge of Allegiance to be recited each day at public schools.

The bill approved by a 31-5 vote Thursday would require schools to conduct a pledge recital, but says that a student "shall not be compelled" to participate against the student's objections.

Lawmakers voting "no" say that clause doesn't go far enough and that the pledge recital should be encouraged but not mandatory.

The Senate also unanimously approved a separate measure requiring American and state of Michigan flags in state buildings to be made in the United States.

Both bills advance to the House.
